    Emma Pallant can expect plenty of local support when she and the Shakespeare's Globe theatre company go open-air at Hodsock Priory (June 28th - 30th). The actress grew up in Nottingham, the daughter of two teachers. Her sister is Kate Williams, who with her husband Stephen Williams runs Operating Theatre, the Nottingham-based musical theatre group.

  6. Green Shoots

    The discovery of a Victorian planting scheme in the overgrown woodland of this ancient garden led to an unexpected new lease of life.

    It was sheer chance rather than design that transformed the fortunes of Hodsock Priory in Nottinghamshire. Back in the late 1980s, Sir Andrew and Lady Buchanan decided to start opening their gardens to make them earn their keep.

    "We originally planned to open all year round", says their son, George, now General Manager of the estate. "But we were flooded in February the first year, so by the time other gardens opened in April, we had been well and truly left behind."

    But, after this inauspicious beginning, their newly appointed head gardener, Kate Garton, made a remarkable dicovery.
