Hodsock Priory Gardens
Hodsock Priory is surrounded by 800 acres of Nottinghamshire countryside, including five acres of formal gardens. Landscaped in 1967, Hodsock Priory gardens and outdoor spaces are a true point of pride.
When you visit us, you will find immaculate lawns, exquisitely planted gardens and a fabulous Italian-style terrace, all of which are carefully maintained by our dedicated Grounds Team.
Our classic English country gardens offer the ideal backdrop to an outdoor wedding ceremony, summer party or exciting corporate event.

Tudor Gatehouse
The Tudor Gatehouse is one of the first things you will see upon arrival at the Hodsock Estate. It was built in the early 16th century by Sir Gervase Clifton (1516-1688), who owned Hodsock Priory before selling it to the Mellish family in 1765.
In the summer of 1541, King Henry VIII visited Sir Gervase Clifton to bestow upon him his knighthood, and it is believed that the Gatehouse was built for this occasion.
Situated at the end of the mile-long drive, the Gatehouse is one of only three Tudor brick-built buildings in Nottinghamshire, making it both utterly beautiful and extremely rare. It is the oldest surviving structure on the estate, and has been granted Grade I listed status to protect this historic structure for generations to come.
Between 1876 and 1925, the upper floors and roof were used as a weather station, and daily records of the weather conditions were taken by Henry Mellish. During World War II, the Gatehouse served as a garden store to support the work of the Land Girls.

Wildlife
There are always plenty of wonderful British birds, insects and animals on the estate, thanks to our careful conservation of wildlife habitats.
Green woodpeckers, yellowhammers, buzzards, kestrels and owls are common at Hodsock, sharing the estate with resident robins, wrens, nuthatches and long-tailed tits. The stream and lake are home to kingfishers, dragonflies and damselflies, along with colonies of toads and frogs.
The Victorian-style apiary houses around 50,000 bees and can be found at the bottom of the main path to the Courtyard. In 2007, all but one of the hives was destroyed by a falling oak tree. Thankfully, the bees were safe, and the hives, like the rest of the house, were carefully restored to their former glory.

Weddings in the garden
Every year, we welcome dozens of couples to celebrate their love with a romantic outdoor wedding ceremony in our gardens.
The Georgian-style gazebo is our licensed ceremony space, although couples are welcome to hold celebrant-led ceremonies anywhere in the gardens. With vibrant flowers in bloom throughout the year, this beautiful example of an English country garden is simply picture perfect.
