Hodsock Priory
From the historic Panelled Hall to the intimate Ante Room, the contemporary Buchanan Hall to the recently renovated Pavilion, discover Hodsock’s interior below.

The Panelled Hall
Guests enter Hodsock’s interior via one of the most historic rooms inside the house. Built in 1874, Hodsock Priory’s panelled walls were hand crafted from oaks grown on the estate. A Victorian fireplace creates a warm traditional backdrop for wedding ceremonies, with the space to host a variety of different events, from intimate parties, corporate events and baby showers.
The room is overlooked by two striking portraits, symbolising the coming together of two families. Painted to celebrate the marriage of Joseph and Dorothea Mellish in the 1720s, you will also find the bride’s sister to the left, unofficially known as ‘Bridesmaid’s Corner’.

The Buchanan Hall
In 2019, the Buchanan family kitchen was renovated to become a multipurpose events space, used frequently for hosting wedding ceremonies, intimate dining experiences and breakfast parties.
Added by Margaret Mellish in 1874, the original Victorian windows frame views of an important piece of our history, the Tudor Gatehouse – built in celebration of King Henry VIII’s visit in 1541. High ceilings, chandeliers, a neutral colour palette, and an original Victorian fireplace make for an awe-inspiring mix of traditional and modern in one room – typical of Hodsock interiors.

The Ante Room
The Ante Room is linked to the Panelled Hall by a grand staircase, with an original 1864 Bechstein piano at its base. The intricate trompe l’oeil of trailing ivy up the staircase, includes birds such as a peacock and pheasant, were painted in 1986 by artist Tom Errington.
The grand atmosphere and doors leading out onto the Italian Terrace provide a welcoming spot for your drinks reception. Around the ceiling you will find a plaster frieze showing swallows dipping in and out of a birdbath, reflecting the fashion in Georgian times to pass on gossip every day amongst the chattering classes.

The Library
The Library also features Georgian architectural details within the plaster work and boasts magnificent views across the Italian Terrace and gardens. Since its build in 1829, the Library has served as a sitting room for the family who reside here. Today the Library is still a cosy spot to relax as well as being licenced for intimate wedding ceremonies.
The Library features a statement Italian fireplace and floor to ceiling bookcases that hold leather bound volumes, digests, fiction and non. Amongst a wide array of historical artefacts, you will find a photograph of current owner, Sir Andrew Buchanan, receiving a knighthood by the Queen at Buckingham Palace after serving as Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire for 22 years.

The House Bar
In recent years, the Buchanan family sitting room has become a spacious bar area, used frequently for hosting a wide array of celebrations. The bar is home to a hand picked selection of local ales, as well as spectacularly prepared cocktails and fine vintages from Hodsock’s extensive wine cellar.
Added by Ann Chambers in 1829, it was incorporated into the extensive redesign of Hodsock Priory in 2007. The bar itself was handmade by a Shoreditch artist, commissioned by interior designer Sophia Playne to bring a little urban glamour to our rural setting. An aisle of sparkling chandeliers connects the House Bar, Ante Room and Library, finishing the Georgian wing with a touch of modern elegance.

The Pavilion
The Pavilion was added in 2007 to enhance Hodsock’s interiors, forming part of a three-year restoration programme to transform Hodsock Priory into a multi-use wedding and event space. Today, a variety of private dining events are hosted here, from large wedding feasts to intimate dinners and evening receptions.
French doors, intricate plasterwork and detailed finishes are combined with the modern necessities needed for celebration including our fully integrated PA system and under floor heating. You will also find the original Georgian windows that once framed views across the gardens.
